Environmental Management
HEDCON has been working with more than 200,000 unorganized labourers in four mineworker areas having sand stone, marble, clay, salt and granite mines, in Western Rajasthan. HEDCON with its network organizations has been able to create 5 mineworkers unions which has membership of more than 25 thousand mineworkers. Some of the major achievements in ensuring the rights of mine workers are as follows-
FLUOROSIS
Fluorosis is a disease caused from drinking water with high fluoride content. Rajasthan has areas with excess fluoride in groundwater which has affected large number of people. The first published research on this topic, Fluorosis in Rajasthan (2001) was done by HEDCON. It has helped in recognition of the disease and allocation of regular budget for defluoridation of drinking water in Rajasthan.
INDIRA GANDHI NAHAR PROJECT
A study on health problems faced by rural people in Bikaner because of polluted water transferred in Indira Gandhi Nahar Canal, helped the Public Health Engineering Department to analyze the cause and take required actions.
ARTIFICIAL GROUND WATER RECHARGING
An advocacy program on artificial recharging of ground water in urban areas, in collaboration with State Ground Water Department, resulted in technical support and constructions of water recharging structures by government departments, factories and hotels in Jaipur, Alwar and Bikaner.
BIO-WASTE MANAGEMENT
HEDCON worked with Health Department and Pollution Control Board to check the status of bio-waste management by government district hospitals in parts of Rajasthan. This helped the hospital administration in understanding the norms and standards of bio-waste management and ensuring its compliance.
ELECTRONIC WASTE MANAGEMENT
HEDCON organized workshops in 275 schools and trained 1500 teachers and 23000 students for electronic waste management.
